About our research

Our findings are based on surveys of samples of a population. They are estimates, not counts. Every survey figure carries a margin of error, and the true value in the population may fall either side of the figure we report.

You should keep the following in mind whenever you read or rely on our numbers.

  • Samples are not censuses. A result drawn from a sample of a few thousand people is an estimate of what a whole population thinks, and it comes with statistical uncertainty.
  • Findings describe the moment they were taken. Public opinion moves. A figure from one wave of fieldwork does not tell you what people think today.
  • Differences within the margin of error are not necessarily real. A movement of a point or two between waves may be noise rather than a change in opinion.
  • Subgroup figures are less reliable than headline figures, because they rest on smaller samples.
  • Wording and question order affect answers. This is why our tracker questions are held constant, and it is why comparing our figures to another organisation’s figures on a differently worded question can mislead.

We publish our methodology, including sample sizes, fieldwork dates, weighting, and question wording, so that anyone can judge the reliability of a figure for themselves. We would rather you did that than take a number on trust.
